Hefer's Market was located at the corner of Second and Maple Streets, 223 E Second St. Bruno Hefer sold the business to his nephew Clarence and in the 1960’s Clarence moved the store to 605 S Laurel St., now the Elbon Shrine Club.

Staunton native and Wall of Honor inductee Arch Hoxsey was the first person to fly 100 miles. On October 8, 1910, he flew from Springfield, Illinois, to the lawn of the St. Louis Country Club in approximately three hours. The distance to St. Louis from Springfield was only 88 miles: he followed the railroad track south from Springfield, then circled Staunton twice, to bring his flight up to 104 miles. Upon landing, he persuaded Teddy Roosevelt to fly with him and piloted the first Presidential plane ride.
