Month Of July At The Worden Public Library

The Worden Public Library's summer reading program is now in full swing. From June 20 thru Sept. 2, children, teens, and adults can fill in reading logs and earn raffle entries for prizes in their age group. Participants will also receive a small prize for finishing at least five books.

The library's regular children’s story and craft events will be held every Saturday in July at 10 a.m. The first story, on July 6, will be We Were Tired of Living in a House, by Liesel Moak Skorpen, with the picture by Doris Burn. Four children decide to leave home after being scolded by their parents. They live in a tree, on a pond, in a cave, and finally by the seashore, where they make sand castles. They like each place they live in, at least for a while. They finally conclude that home is much safer. The library will make sand castle pictures using sandpaper and small American flags to take home.

The library will celebrate the Fourth of July by displaying a Fort McHenry flag. Fort McHenry flags have flown for at least one day over Fort McHenry and are replicas of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner after seeing that the “flag was still there” during the War of 1812. The flag has only fifteen stars since there were only fifteen states at that time. It is different from the current flag in another mysterious way. Come to the Worden Public Library to discover that difference.
