The next children’s program will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m. The featured book will be Red Riding Hood, retold and illustrated by James Marshall.
In Marshall’s version of the familiar story, Granny is a voracious reader whose main complaint about being swallowed by the wolf is that it’s too dark to read inside the wolf’s belly. After being delivered from the wolf, Red Riding Hood vows to “never, ever speak to another stranger, charming manners or not.”
Marshall’s illustrations add to the humor, showing the busy kitchen of Red Riding Hood’s mother, complete with a scattering of cats above, on, and under the table.
In the scene where the wolf sleeps after swallowing Granny and Red Riding Hood, an empty box of after dinner mints can be spied on the floor. Children who come to the program will make pictures of Red Riding Hood to take home.
What do Samuel Colt, Agatha Christie, Robert Oppenheimer, Robert E. Lee, and Gypsy Rose Lee have in common? They were all topics of discussion at the Libraries May book club meeting.
Feel free to bring any books to the meetings for discussion. The Worden Public Library Book Club will next convene on Monday, June 24, at 10 a.m.
Anyone who would like to obtain information on epilepsy is invited to come to the library on Thursday, June 13, from 1 p.m. to 3:30. p.m. Handouts will be available and a representative from the Epilepsy Foundation will be at the library to answer any questions.
