The Lady Bulldogs Soccer Team Win Over Cavies Leads To Great Momentum For Regional Play May 10

The Lady Bulldogs kicked off last week at home on Wednesday May 1. The Lady Dogs faced off with the Lady Cavaliers of Carlinville. The Lady Dogs needed to win this match to help push them towards a 2nd place finish in the SCC.

The Lady Dogs came into the match in 5th place in the SCC at 10-7, while the Lady Cavaliers came into the match at 9-7-2 The spring weather had not been cooperating, the field was messy and both teams would be wet and muddy by the end of the match. The Lady Dogs had played the Cavies earlier in the year in the Route 66 tournament and had lost in PK kicks. Today's match would be different. In the 12th minute Ryenne Dugger (Freshman MF) finds Bre Feeley (Senior Forward), who turns and hits Samantha Fulton (Junior MF) with a crisp pass. Fulton lines it up and slams the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring 1-0 for the Lady Dogs.

The halfway mark of the game hits just as Feeley on the right side finds a wide open Katie Pritchett (Freshman Forward) on the right side, who grabs the ball in stride and strikes it up and over the goalkeeper. Forty minutes into the game the Lady Bulldogs are ahead 2-0. Neither the Lady Dogs or Lady Cavies had successful scoring drives in the second, ending the game 2-0 Lady Dogs and improving our record to 11-7 overall and 4-2 record in SCC play.

Staunton, looking for their 12th win of the year, traveled to Weslin on 5/3 to meet the Weslin Warriors. Twelve wins have only been accomplished by the Lady Bulldog soccer team five other times in the history of girls soccer at SHS.

In the third minute of the match, Samantha Fulton (Junior MF) finds Bre Feeley (Senior Forward) in stride running down the right side. Feeley collects the ball, cuts into the left, and beats the goalkeeper near post to open the scoring 1-0 for the Lady Dogs. Six Minutes later, the Warriors retaliated and made the score 1-1. At the halfway point the score remained 1-1 and the Lady Dogs were ready to have the wind at their back!

The second half of the game was faster paced than the first half. Both teams had multiple opportunities to make breakaways, but both goaltenders were solid. Finally, in the 27th minute of the second half, Leach crosses the ball to Feeley, who quickly beats the defender with a quick dribble and rips off a shot with her left foot and scores for the good goal. Staunton Lady Bulldogs 2 Weslin Lady Warriors 1. Neither team scores again in this match and games end as a win for Staunton. The Lady Dogs end the week with a record of 12-7 and will take on both the North Mac Panthers on 5/6 and the Litchfield Panthers on 5/7. Both of these matches will be SCC conference games.

The Lady Dogs will begin Regional playoffs on 5/10 against the Gillespie Miners in Greenville at 6:30 pm.
