Worden Public Library’s next family program is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. The featured book will be The Truth About Dragons, by Julie Leung, with illustrations by Hanna Cha.
In Leung's book, a small boy learns about dragons from his two grandmothers. Each has a different version of what a dragon is. One says that dragons dwell underground and are “fearsome and fire-breathing,” with lizard bodies and bat’s wings.
The other maintains that they are “majestic creatures of air and fire,” with serpents’ bodies and five claws on each leg. The boy discovers that he can learn much from both traditions. As for an activity in connection with the book, children will make colorful paper dragons to take home.
The Library Board President, Rosemarie Pickerill, retired from the board in April. Pickerill had served on the board since 2002 and she became the president in 2016.
During her time as the Library Board President, she was instrumental in developing the landscaping around the outside of Worden's Public Library. She also led the library through the COVID crisis, during which she helped meet the goal of safely keeping the library open.
Besides dealing with the many legal duties in running a library district, she donated freely of her time during the book fair and other library functions. She was also a valuable contact with the community and always ready to listen to patrons’ concerns.
Robert Kellar from the Epilepsy Foundation, was at the library on Thursday, May 2, where he handed out free information and also answered any questions people may have about this condition, including how to react if you see someone having a seizure.
The library will have a new art exhibit in May. Every year the St. Louis Art Museum holds Art in Bloom, in which florists from the area are invited to interpret works of art in the museum’s collection. The library decided we would do our own version of this popular event. The Brick House in Staunton was asked to make a floral arrangement to accompany a painting by a Worden artist. Stop by the library any time, especially during this month of May and see the results.
