Frog and Toad Night Hike, H & B Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary

On April 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Bremer's will be hosting a Frog and Hiking at night offers encounters and sounds the average person may never experience. Join us as we host Jim Hefley, retired Aquatic Biologist from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, for an in-barn program and nocturnal hike to our vernal ponds. Species to encounter may include Spring Peeper, Chorus Frog, Wood Frog and American Toads. What to bring: Flashlight, bug repellent, proper footwear.

Bremer Sanctuary Spring and Summer Bird Hikes, April 6 and June 1 at 7 a.m. Our spring hike will focus on resident birds along with the early arrival of several species of migratory birds. Red-headed Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouse, Northern Cardinals and Eastern Bluebirds will be present. Nest box checks will be explained and demonstrated.

Our Summer Hike will focus on the migrating species: warblers; vireos; tanagers; sparrows along with all the resident birds. Good chances of viewing of Indigo Bunting, Eastern Towhee, Summer Tanager and Common Yellowthroat are possible.

Guided easy level hiking for 90 minutes leaves promptly at 7 a.am. Dress for the weather. Wear a hat and sturdy shoes or boots. Bring bug repellent, binoculars and bottled water. Light breakfast items available after the hike. Open to the public. Donations accepted. Canceled if raining.

Bremer Sanctuary is pleased to announce we are planning a public workday on Saturday, April 6 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The focus will be weed pulling, spreading mulch around the viewing platforms, amphitheater area, memorial area, and approaches to the covered bridge. Participants will need to bring their own rakes, shovels and gloves. Stick removal from Timber Trail for the upcoming mowing season and Housecleaning in our Education Barn are also needed duties. Public attendees will not be aloe dot use power tools or our UTV’s. Bremer stewards will be present if this is needed.
