At the beginning of this 2023 school year the Staunton Education Foundation (SEF) asked teachers to complete forms listing items that they were needing in their classroom. They responded asking for items that totaled over $ 24,000. A few of the items that were approved were hands on materials for reading, math and science, whiteboards, sensory items that aid in needs of fidgety students, divider folders, and novels along with many other items. There were a few items that were not approved and they included choir robes, a laser printer cutter, carpets, subscriptions, t-shirts, tables and chairs, a laminator, and wall dividers. The Education Foundation bylaws state items can only be purchased if directly associated with teaching, therefore the choir robes could not be purchased with SEF funds. Amy Roller, a member of the Education Foundation board, felt it was a necessity so she asked her grandmother to purchase the robes and she agreed. Knowing how important the laser printer cutter would be to the FFA and shop class Walter Spotte agreed to purchase this item.
