Fosterburg Road / Brighton-Bunker Hill Rd. intersection to close Monday

The intersection at Brighton-Bunker Hill Road and Fosterburg Road will be closing for several months beginning Monday. It’s time for construction on Phase 2 of the project to begin, which will see that intersection closed until late spring or early summer, according to the Macoupin County Highway Engineer.

That is assuming the weather remains cooperative. The intersection has been part of an unofficial detour during the reconstruction of Brighton-Bunker Hill Road that is replacing the bridge between the Shipman Cutoff and Fosterburg Road. Much of that stretch of road is done, with a preliminary layer of asphalt already laid down. The bridge has been lengthened and the road widened, and the grade was raised by about eight feet on the east side of the bridge.

With the intersection work beginning, it will still be months until traffic in the area is back to normal. Local traffic has been using North Fosterburg and Miles Station Roads as an unofficial detour since Phase 1 began last spring.
