Melvin R. “Mel” Weisbrod, 81, of Lindbergh, died on Dec. 7, 2023 while recuperating from surgery. He was born Dec. 7, 1942 the son of Russell and Pauline Weisbrod and both preceded him in death.
He attended Lutheran schools, then graduated from Lindbergh High School, and went on to graduate from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and finished with a Master’s Degree in Education. He would often be found involved in a competitive racquetball or handball game. After graduation, he started teaching social studies at the University City High School. Mel’s teaching career spanned 30 years and included stints of coaching wrestling and cross country teams.
History, specifically religious history, really sparked his interest and he loved to discuss this topic. He tried a wide range of activities from ballroom dancing to raising cattle. He also served four years in the Air Force. He seemed to really enjoy his retirement life which involved keeping busy by cutting the grass on his farm while riding on one of his working lawnmowers.
Mel was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Ellis. He is survived by his nephew, Chris Plag; niece, Jill Tienes; grandnephew, Andrew Tienes; grandniece, Allison Tienes; and cousins, Gerry Eckles and Jay Eckles. His many friends included Linda Giannoni, Steve and Barb Oppland and Family; as well as many wonderful neighbors and church members.
On Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, all are invited to join the family in a celebration of Mel’s life at 1 p.m. at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 460 Church St., of Livingston, 62058. In lieu of flowers, anybody may send donations to the charity or food pantry of your choice in Mel’s name.
