Steele

Charles “Ed” Steele, 88, of Worden, Ill., died at Anderson Hospital in Maryville on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023. He was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Ripley County, Mo., the son of the late Thomas R. Steele and Mary Sullivan Steele. He married Anna Gulley on Aug. 6, 1962, in East St. Louis, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 2001.

He worked as a telecommunications operator at Madison Telco in Staunton for several years. He served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his daughter, Lora (David) Connor of Worden; his son, Eddie (Theresa) Steele of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Zach) Gilbert of Carbondale, Chadwick Connor of Worden, Blake Steele of Glen Carbon,Wade Steele of Panama City Beach, Fla .; a great-grandson, Henry Gilbert of Carbondale, a sister, Mary Sue Payne of Doniphan, Mo .; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carleton “Junior” Steele, Ronnie Steele; and two sisters, Bonnie Allen and Marjorie Engelken.

Private graveside services will be held at Worden City Cemetery.
