The Staunton Varsity Boy's High School Soccer team, seeded 6th in the Williamsville sectional and traveled to Greenville on Friday night, Oct. 13, to take on the Greenville Comets. Greenville was seeded as the 4th team in the same sectional.
Unfortunately, the first score of the match was by the Comets, on a header for goal 12 minutes into the match. Just three minutes later, at the 25 minute mark, the Comets scored their second goal of the match, giving the Comets a 2 - 0 lead going into intermission. The Comets began the second half where they left off in the first half, scoring their third goal 17 minutes into the second half of the match to make the score 3 - 0, Comets, before the Bulldogs put a goal on the scoreboard.
Carson Buffington kicked a goal over the goalie’s head, into the goal to give the Bulldogs their first goal and reduce the deficit to 3 - 1 at the 20 minute mark in the period. Unfortunately, the Comets scored their fourth goal of the match at the seven minute mark, to take a 4 - 1 lead.
Aaron Bodner scored a goal at the four minute mark to again, cut the deficit to a two -goal lead, but it wasn’t enough. The Comets pulled away with the victory, 4 - 2. Ty Simpson finished with 27 saves in the match.
Greenville will move on to take on the number 1 seeded Teutopolis Wooden Shoes on Tuesday night, Oct. 17.
The Bulldogs finished their season at 9 wins and 12 losses, overall, and 4 - 4 in the conference, tied for 5th place. It was a great season for the Bulldogs, and their first year coach, Tyler Finnegan.
