Staunton loses a close one to the birds

The Bulldogs played the Piasa Birds on Friday, Sept. 29. Going into the game, both teams had the same 2 - 3 record and tis game seemed to confirm that similarity.

The two teams played a scoreless first quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter, Southwestern cored with a 32 yard rushing TD by Hunter Newell Their PAT failed giving them the 6-0 lead.

Still in the 2nd quarter, Blake Rimbey broke through with a 61 yard rushing TD. The 2 point conversion failed by Southwestern had a 12-0 lead.

With 8 minutes left in the first half, Dalton Bianco completed a pass to Drake Rose that gave the ball to Staunton on the Southwestern 12 yard line. Just two minutes later, a Braden Buffington to Cody Kapp 15 yard pass was good for a Bulldog TD. Carter Legendre kicked the PAT and Staunton had closed the scoring gap to 7-12. With just 1 minute left in the first half, Southwestern scored on a 26 yard pass play and rushed for the 2 point conversion, giving Southwestern their 20-7 halftime lead.

In the 3rd quarter, after Southwestern had turned the ball over on downs, Bianco completed a 67 yard pass play to Buffington good for a Bulldog TD. Legendre kicked the PAT and Staunton had closed the scoring gap to 14-20. However, still in the 3rd quarter, Southwestern added another TD good for 6 points and held the 26-14 lead. The Bulldogs were able to add another TD the 4th quarter when Bianco scored on a 2 yard rush. The PAT failed and Staunton was on the short end of the 26-20 final score.

Bianco completed 9 of his passing attempts including one for a TD. Buffington completed a pass to Cody Kapp good for a TD. Other receivers were Drake Rose and Trace Trettenero.

Bianco led the team is rushing yardage adding 39 yards in 8 carries.

On defense, Jordan Snider had 5 solo tackles and 3 assists including 1 that created lost yardage for Southwestern. Jesse Baker also had 3 solo, 2 assists and 1 tackle that created a lost yardage for Southwestern. Other Bulldogs with at least a total of 5 (solo or assists) tackles were Zach Anderson 7/1, Khirty Taylor 4/1, Raymond Gray 2/3,
