Irene Marie Davis, 79, of Mt. Olive, Ill., died on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. She was born on Jan. 15, 1944, in St. Louis, Mo., to George Washington Paul Lorenz and Marie Emma (Davis) Lorenz. She married Noble McCreary, who preceded her in death in 1981. She married John Joseph Davis in 1982, and he survives.
She attended Staunton High School and graduated in the class of 1962. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She was employed by several places in her lifetime, including the Mill Cafe, L W Chemicals, Inc., and the Mt. Olive Herald. Irene was an excellent cook and gardener. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading several books a week from the Mt. Olive Library. She enjoyed spending time outdoors or in her screened-in porch and tending to her flowers. She was known for her German potato salad, the recipe for which was kept in strictest confidence.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, John Davis; a daughter, Shannon (Kevin) McCreary-White of St. Louis, Mo.; a stepson, Rex (Ana) McCreary from El Cajon, Calif.; a sister, Crystal Lorenz Leaser; and many nieces and nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Richard McCreary; a sister, Dorothy Schuerman of Staunton; a brother, George "Rollie" Lorenz, of Worden; brothers-in-law, Charles Leaser of Staunton, Delmar "Del" Schuerman of Fosterburg, William Senjan of White City; a sister-in-law, Rena Senjan of White City; and nephews, Victor Schuerman of Staunton and Bradley James "BJ" Leaser of Staunton.
A private graveside service will take place at the Mt. Olive City Cemetery.
