The varsity Boy's soccer team went two and one this week, defeating Piasa 2-0 in extra time, and defeating East Alton Wood River 2-1. Unfortunately, they lost a tough one to Litchfield with the final score being 1-0, bringing their overall wins and losses record to 5-6. The Bulldogs are currently tied in the SCC for 2nd place, with a 2-1 inner-conference play record.
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the boy's soccer team traveled to Litchfield. The match was tied at zero until the panthers scored their first and only goal with six minutes left to play in the first half, which was the deciding goal in the match. The second half was a hard fought contest for neither team had a goal. Staunton had seven shots on goal, but were unable to get one pass the Litchfield goalkeeper. Staunton's goalkeeper, Ty Simpson, made 21 saves.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, the Bulldogs hosted Piasa and after playing a hard 80 minutes, the match was tied at zero at the end of regulation. Since it was a conference game, the game went into extra time, playing two, 10 minute halves. In extra time, both Carson Buffington and Rhyse Rucker had 1 goal to give Staunton a 2-0 victory. Simpson had 9 saves in the match and Aaron Bodner had an assist on one of the Bulldog goals.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, Staunton traveled to Wood River to take on the East Alton/Wood River Oilers. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs took the lead in the second half from the first of 2 goals scored by Rucker. The Oilers came back just a few minutes later to tie the match at 1, then Rucker scored his second, which was the deciding goal. Luke Andresk was credited with the assist. Simpson, had 9 saves in the match.
The Bulldogs traveled to Hillsboro on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Come cheer on Staunton when they host North Mac on Thursday, Sept. 21, and then they will finish out homecoming week against Breese Central on Saturday, Sept. 23.
