The Chamber of Commerce's event, Strassenfest, was a hit for the second year in a row. This was the City of Staunton's second year of hosting the event, and it's safe to say that this is a community event that proved to be a great time for all during the month of Oct.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the chalk art competition, which was put on by the MAC Program, started the event off at 11 a.m. They had 13 different entry's or squares of art that were entered in the contest.Children of all age ranges were present at the event. The MAC Program not only supplied the chalk for the art projects, but they also created smiles for the kids that chose to take their time and even for those that rushed with excitement. Winners were determined by individual age grouping and then the band, Klose Kuarters, announced the three individual winners of each age group at 2 p.m. when the chalk art event concluded. However, that did not conclude Strassenfest for the day.
After the chalk art contest, the weather, music, and people in attendance all started to gear towards the direction of what some may call, "the perfect day."
As the sprinkled rain moved and overall, avoided the City of Staunton as the day progressed, residents and anyone else who wanted to enjoy the festivities were blessed with amazing weather. The sun bursted through the clouds around 4 p.m. and it supplied a slight bit of warmth to those who were stuck with the overcast throughout the day.
There were two food vendor tents that were set up and they supplied brats, hot dogs, lemon shake-ups and many more throughout the day. They were accompanied by two separate beer trucks that were pouring reasonably priced draft beers for any adult that was of age to do so. These vendors were all stationed on both sides of the stage which was set up directly in the middle of the area blocked off for Strassenfest. There was also a tent set up with tables and chairs neighboring Rooster's Pub, for anyone that wanted to sit and enjoy the music while staying partially out of the way from the larger number of congregated people along Main Street.
