Library Happenings by Julie Jarman

The month of July is here already! It is hard to fathom that we have passed the middle of the year!

Just a refresher on our library hours:

Monday thru Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday closed

Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon

Sunday closed

The library was closed Tuesday, July 4, in observance of the 4th of July holiday.

Story Book Walk at the Park

The July story Bear Came Along by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by Leuyen Pham for the Storybook Walk at the park is now up at the Water Tower Park. It is a beautifully illustrated story about forest animal friends having an adventure. Fun times, the great outdoors and team work are the featured highlights of this book. We are very excited to be able to share it with the town. These stories will be changed every four to five weeks depending on the weather.

Rocky the Snake

There is a snake at the library.

For the first week of July, the library is asking everyone to decorate a rock and add to Rocky the Snake out at the Pearl Street entrance near the MAC free little library if you have not already done so. One of our coworkers, Jo Nolan, started this fun event the third week of June. You can check out our pictures on facebook to get a better idea what we are referring to. At last count, we had over 40 rocks making up the snake’s body. It is something fun and easy to do since rocks can be found anywhere. Help up build the snake!

Reading Kits

The library is now offering reading kits inside the library. They can be found on the small black carts next to the children’s game shelf by the circulation desk. Please stop by for something of interest. A book, an activity and a game or toy can be found in each container. They can be used as a table top activity inside the library only, same as the children’s games since these items cannot be checked out. There are books about dogs, unicorns, animals, bears, and narwhals. Picture books and chapter books alike can be found on the small carts. There are also plenty of fun games like Cat Tower, Candy Land and Memory game there for everyone to enjoy on the game shelf. Legos, cards, pattern blocks and checkers can also be found on the young adult book shelf next to the newspaper rack for everyone to enjoy.

Movies

The Staunton Public Library is also purchasing movies every month. Blockbusters like Avatar: The Color of Water, The Covenant, Renfield, Ant/ Wasp Quantamania, 80 for Brady, Creed III, and All Quiet on the Western Front were on the most recent orders. It feels great to be able to add to our movie collection each month. If the library does not have it, chances are good we can borrow it from another library with a valid library card.

SRP23

Our Summer Reading Program ended the last week of June. The library staff always enjoys seeing all of the families come in to do story time and activities. Find Your Voice was the theme this year. Thank you to all the families who were able to participate with us. We really enjoyed it!

SRP23 Finale

Our finale was held on Thursday, June 28 – The MAC Art Bus visited that day for wheel throwing. Our wish was that at least one child who had not had the opportunity to enjoy the art bus or the MAC was encouraged and inspired to create artwork when they left us that day. What a wonderful thought!

Check us out on our Facebook page, email [email protected], or call us at 618- 635 -3852. See you all at the library one day soon.
