The Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund donated two automated external defibrillator (AED) devices to the Staunton High School Shooting Sports Team and the Staunton Soccer and Baseball/Softball organization.
Greg Holthaus was a seemingly healthy 18-year-old graduate of Highland High School where he played football and baseball. He died suddenly from cardiac arrest in 2013. His mother, Gail Holthaus, presented the two AEDs to the Staunton organizations in his memory and explained about Greg's condition and the screenings that can detect hidden heart conditions. These conditions often go undetected. She explained that only one in 10 survive sudden cardiac arrest, but if CPR and an AED would be immediately used, five in 10 could survive.
Spreading the word of awareness and the hope with portable AED machines is the mission of the Holthaus family.
