Gladys Rose (Smith) Sauerwein, 85, of Bethalto, Ill., died at Evelyn's House in Creve Coeur, Mo., on Saturday, March 4, 2023. She was born July 4, 1937, in Bunker Hill Township to Robert James and Gladys Lillian (Moore) Smith.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill. Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, fishing, playing pinochle and playing free cell. She also enjoyed genealogy, puzzles and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Carla (Jeff) Sauerwein of Alton; son, Edward (Diane) Sauerwein of Sedgwick, Kan .; grandchildren, Joshua (Jamie) Mills of Belle Plaine, Kan., Jared (Erin) Mills of Jerseyville, Marsha (Eugene) Crane of Wichita, Kan., Rebecca (Joe) Taylor of Sedgwick, Kan., Melissa Ashby of Wichita, Kan .; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Glenn (Mary) Smith of Bunker Hill; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Marvin Sauerwein; grandson, Isaac Gould; brothers, Charles Smith, James Smith, Norman Smith; and sisters, Lillie Mae King and Betty Smith.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 11, at Kravanya Funeral Home in Bunker Hill. Burial was at Bunker Hill Cemetery.
