The Staunton Terriers swept two non-conference games last week, as both the 7th and 8th grade squads defeated Litchfield and Greenville.
On Monday, Dec. 12, SJHS welcomed Litchfield to Staunton. The 8th grade Terriers shot out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter and eventually won the game 56-19. Staunton made eight 3-pointers on the night, with Isiah Laux (12 pts.) notching half of them. Eleven players scored in the game, including Luke Moore (11 pts.), Owen Looney, Owen Rizzi (8 pts. each), Ty Simpson (4 pts.), Calvin Harbers (3 pts.), Lucas Dillon, Jeremiah Graham, Caiden Crowe, Braylen Brown, and Josh Dahl (2 pts. each). The 7th graders faced a team that they had defeated by just 5 points earlier in the season. However, SJHS played an excellent first half, going up 20-2 and eventually won 32-18 in a game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicates. Cale Dugger exploded for a career high 20 points on the night, and he was aided by Aiden Saracco (8 pts.), Paxton Brown (2 pts.), and Kaiden Linkeman (2 pts.).
The Terriers also hosted Greenville on Thursday. The 8th grade again caught fire from outside, dropping in another nine 3-pointers to win 47-17. Looney (14 pts.) and Moore (12 pts.) posted double figures for SJHS, with additional scoring coming from Simpson (6 pts.), Laux (6 pts.), Bryan Podwojski (5 pts.), and Graham (4 pts.). The 7th graders faced one of their toughest opponents of the year but played an excellent game in a 33-19 victory. Dugger and Saracco both popped in 15 points, with Brown (2 pts.) and Linkeman (1 pt.) rounding out the scoring.
Staunton was set to welcome Hillsboro on Monday before taking time off for the holidays. They return from the break with a busy week at Nokomis (Jan. 3), at Southwestern (Jan. 4), and home to Carlinville (Jan. 5).
