The Staunton Terriers swept three conference games last week, as both the 7th and 8th grade squads defeated Southwestern, Carlinville, and Bunker Hill. .
On Monday, Dec. 5, SJHS welcomed Southwestern to Staunton. This game was a rematch of the championship game of the Staunton Tournament the previous week. The Terriers got off to a shaky 17-13 halftime lead before pulling away with a 44-24 victory. Nine players scored for the Terriers, with Luke Moore leading the way with 14 points. Owen Looney (9 pts.), Jeremiah Graham (6 pts.), Braylen Brown (4 pts.), Isiah Laux (3 pts.), Lucas Dillon, Lucas Coalson, Peyton Luketich (2 pts.), and Ty Simpson (2 pts. each) also scored for Staunton. The 7th graders played one of their best games of the year in a 41-19 victory. Cale Dugger and Paxton Brown both notched double figures with 15 points and 11 points, respectively. Other scoring contributors included Kaiden Linkeman (8 pts.), Aiden Saracco (3 pts.), Chase Foster (2 pts.), and Ethan Watters (2 pts.).
The team traveled to Carlinville the next night and again came away with a sweep. The 8th graders used a smothering defense to win 38-5, while the 7th graders won a grudge match by the score of 21-18. Eight players scored in the 8th grade game, including Moore (10 pts.), Looney (8 pts.), Graham (4 pts.), Laux (4 pts.), Owen Rizzi (4 pts.), Coalson (3 pts.), Luketich (3 pts.), and Brown (2 pts.). The 7th graders were led by Saracco (11 pts.), Dugger (6 pts.), and Brown (4 pts.) in their conference victory.
Staunton welcomed Bunker Hill on Thursday to end a busy week. The 8th graders started slowly but still took a 15-8 lead into halftime, with all 15 points coming on 3-pointers. The third quarter was a turning point, as the Terriers outscored the Patriots 25-2 on their way to a 42-10 victory. The Terriers made 11 3-pointers in the game, including four each from Moore (19 pts.) and Laux (12 pts.), as well as three from Looney (9 pts.). Luketich (2 pts.) rounded out the scoring. The 7th graders defeated Bunker Hill for the third time with a 36-12 victory. Dugger paced the attack with 11 points, and he was aided by Saracco (8 pts.), Xander Clark (8 pts.), Brown (5 pts.), Lucas Klein (2 pts.), and Foster (2 pts.).
The Terriers have two home games this week (Litchfield on Dec. 12, Greenville on Dec. 15) and will finish the calendar year with a home game against Hillsboro on Dec. 19.
