Vandalia continued their path to the playoffs Friday night by winning their Homecoming game vs. Staunton 48-12.
The Bulldogs were the first to score with just under 8 minutes left in the first quarter. Cody Ury completed a pass to Braden Buffington good for 18 yards and a Bulldog TD. The Vandals blocked the PAT but the Bulldogs led 6-0.
Vandalia scored a TD and PAT making the score 7-6. With just a minute left in the first period, the Vandals made a rushing TD. Their try for the 2-point conversion failed but they had increased their lead to 13-6 after 1 period of play.
About 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter, the Vandals scored another TD. Their PAT missed, making the score 19-6. Later, still in the 2nd quarter, Vandalia missed a field goal attempt giving Staunton possession. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs. The Vandals scored their next TD on a pass play and made the 2-point conversion to make the score 27-6 Vandals.
Following a Staunton punt, the Vandals had made a long run, but then Cole Sternickle intercepted a pass to stop the Vandal drive.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt and the Vandals added another rushing TD plus the 2-point conversion to take a 35-6 lead at halftime.
Possession changed seven times in the third quarter but neither team was able to score.
As the final quarter opened, the Vandals had the ball at their own 5. They had moved to inside the 20 when they scored on a passing play. The PAT was good giving the Vandals a 48-6 lead. Late in the 4th, Ury completed a pass to Buffington for another Bulldog TD. They missed the PAT and the Bulldogs ended on the short end of the 48-12 score.
Ury completed six passes good for 74 yards and 2 TDs. Receivers were Buffington, 3 for 49 yards and 2 TDs; Trace Tretteneero, 1 for 3; Sternickle, 1 for 16; and Jacob Dillon, 1 for 6 yards.
Rushing yardage was led by Drake Rose gaining 58 yards in 14 carries; Andrew Dustman gained 23 in 4 carries; Dillon, 22 in 9; Cody Kapp, 16 in 3; Sternickle, 8 in 2; and Trettenero, 1 in 1.
Leading in tackles: Zack Painter with 8 solo and 4 assists; other Bulldogs with multiple tackles/assists were: Buffington 5/0, Dustman 3/5, Sternickle 3/2, Reece Girth 3/4, Ryan Gaines 2/4, Dillon 2/3, Thomas Scroggins 2/1, Tretteneero 1/3, Drake Rose, Sean Fleming and Jordan Snider each had 1 solo tackle; and assists were by Tommy Campbell (2), Carter Reathaford and Dalton Bianco.
Next week, Oct. 7, the Bulldogs play at home vs. Hillsboro.
