Friday, Sept. 9, the Greenville Comets were in Staunton for our third game of the season. The Comets were able to claim their 2nd win of the season when they defeated the Bulldogs 38-14.
The Comets took the opening kickoff. They had advanced the ball to a 2nd & goal and ran in for their first TD. Their PAT try failed but they led 6-0 with 8:57 still left in the 1st quarter. After trading punts, the Comets would run for another TD. Their try for the 2-point conversion failed but they now held a 12-0 lead. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs had been forced to punt when the Comets put together three completed passes ending with a run for another Comet TD. Again, their try for the 2-point conversion failed but their lead had been extended to 18-0. With just seconds left in the first half, Greenville completed a pass into the end zone for another TD. The kick for the PAT gave the Comets a 25-0 lead at halftime.
The Comets kicked off to start the 2nd half. After trading punts, Staunton put together a drive that included four first downs, a 27-yard run by Drake Rose and ended with a 3-yard run TD by Andrew Dustman. Cole Aberle kicked the extra point giving Staunton their 7 points.
The scoring celebration was short lived as the Comets returned the Bulldog kick-off with a 95-yard TD run. Their kick for the PAT was good giving the Comets a 32-7 lead.
Early in the 4th quarter, Greenville scored again on a 34-yard pass play extending their lead 38-7.
With less than a minute to play, Ury completed a pass to Jacob Dillon who ran in for a Bulldog TD. The pass/run play covered 86 yards. The Aberle PAT kick was good giving the Bullogs their 14 points.
Cody Ury was the Bulldog QB He completed 8 of his 16 passing attempts good for a total of 171 yards. Receivers were Drake Rose, 2 for 21 yards; Braden Buffington, 2 for 28; Andrew Dustman, 1 for 22 , Jacob Dillon, 2 for 93 and Ricky Woods, 1 for 9 yards.
Leading ground gainers were Drake Rose with 69 yards rushing followed by Jacob Dillon with 60, Andrew Dustman 16 and Cole Sternickle 7.
Defense was led by Zack Painter with 6 solo tackles and 1 assist and Andrew Dustman with 5 solo and 5 assists. Other Bulldogs with multiple tackles/assists included Reece Girth 4/3, Jacob Dillon 4/3, Jordan Snider 4/2 and Cody Kapp 2/5.
This Friday, Sept. 16, the Bulldogs will be on the road as they travel to Pana for another conference game.
