Bulldogs lose to Litchfield Panthers

The Staunton/Bunker Hill Bulldogs traveled to Litchfield Friday Sept. 2. The host Panthers defeated the Bulldogs 22-14.

The Bulldogs kicked off to open the game. The Panthers put together four first downs and were 2nd and goal at the 1, when they scored their first TD. The Panthers ran the two-point conversion and grabbed the 8-0 lead.

On their first possession, the Bulldogs had moved the ball from their own 35 to the Litchfield 29 when an interception gave the ball back to Litchfield.

With about 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs had possession but after two Bulldog penalties and a high snap preventing the punt, Litchfield took over on downs. The Panthers scored on a 38-yard run and ran the two-point conversion for the 16-0 lead.

The Bulldog's next possession saw Ricky Woods run 15 yards for a first and 10, then another 18-yard gain for a first and goal. A Ury-to-Buffington pass gave the Bulldogs their first TD and it was Woods that ran the 2-point conversion making the score Staunton 8 - Litchfield 16 which was the half-time score.

Litchfield kicked off to start the second half. A light rain had started.

The Bulldogs had possession at their own 47. Runs by Jacob Dillon, and a completed pass to Buffington put the Bulldogs in a 3rd and goal at the 2 when Drake Rose ran in for the Bulldog TD. The 2-point conversion attempt failed but the Bulldogs had added 6 and now trailed by just 2 points (14-16).

With just 21 seconds left in the game, Litchfield scored on a pass play giving them the 22-14 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, the Panthers used the onside kick which they recovered to keep possession and end the game ahead 22-14 .

Ury was the Bulldog QB. He completed 6 of 12 passing attempts, good for 60 yards and one TD. Receivers were Rose, 2 for 16; Woods, 1 for 10; Buffington, 3 for 34.

Staunton had 189 yards rushing led by Dillon with 70, Rose 59, Woods 46, Buffington 20, Cole Sternickle 11, and Andrew Dustman 7.

On defense, Zach Painter led with 10 solo tackles and 9 assists. Andrew Dustman made 6 solo tackles and 5 assists. Other Bulldogs with multiple solo/assists were Trace Trettenero 3/1, Cody Kapp 3/5, Jordan Snider 3/1, Carter Reathaford 2/4, Cole Aberle 2/0 and Cole Sternickle 1/9.

Next week, Sept. 9, the Bulldogs will play at home vs. Greenville.
