Bulldogs lose home opener to Piasa Birds

Southwestern came to Staunton and defeated the Bulldogs 26 - 14 in the opening game of the 2022 season.

SW 6 - 6 -14 - 0 = 26

The Bulldogs got their first TD with a little over 4 minutes left in the first half when Drake Rose scored on a 5-yard run. Cole Aberle kicked the extra point.

With a little over 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Jacob Dillon broke lose and ran 65 yards for the second Bulldog TD. Aberle successfully kicked another Bulldog PAT giving Staunton their 14 points. Aberle also did the kick-offs for Staunton.

Quarterback Cody Ury completed 9 of his 18 passing attempts, good for 82 yards. Bulldog receivers were: Drake Rose 2 for 16 yards, Cole Sternickle 2 for 32 yards; Zach Painter 2 for 15 yards; Cody Kapp 1 for 3; Braden Buffington 1 for -2, Jacob Dillon 1 for 18.

The Bulldogs rushed for a total of 114 yards led by Dillon with 86 yards in 6 carries and Sternickle with 19 yards on 5 carries. Andrew Dustman added 10 yards and Rose had 4 yards rushing.

Buffington was the punter for Staunton, kicking 4 for 172 yards for a 43-yard average.

Staunton had 17 players making a total 33 solo tackles and 57 assists. They were led by Sternickle with 5 solo and 7 assists and Buffington with 5 solo and 2 assists. Others with multiple solo/assists were: Dustman 4/7, Painter 2/8, Reece Girth 3/5, Sean Fleming 3/3, Thomas Scroggins 2/2, and Jordan Snider 2/5.

With that first week under their belt, the Bulldogs are looking to improve next week and hopefully cut down on penalties. They will play at Litchfield on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. Litchfield lost last week to Gillespie so they will also be looking for their first win.
