Matevey

Gary M. Matevey, 82, of Gillespie, Ill., died at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022. He was born July 29, 1940, in Litchfield to Michael and Helen Herrin Matevey. He married Patricia Ann Campbell on Oct. 12, 1968, in Benld. She survives.

He was retired after having been a ballistics tester for Olin Corp. Gary was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Gary played football, basketball and track. He was the 100-yard dash State of Illinois qualifier. He still holds the 100-yard dash record at Gillespie High School. Gary received numerous dog of the year awards with the Field Trial of Illinois. He was a charter member of the Macoupin County Field Trials Club where he also had served as president, secretary, treasurer. He was an avid field trials enthusiast as well as hunter and fisherman. He was an Illini and Cubs sports fan. Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Matevey of Gillespie; siblings, Jim (Jo Ann) Matevey of Midway, Suzanne (Kenny) Fritzsche of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, Mildred Campbell Stetters and brother-in-law, John Campbell.
