The Staunton High School baseball team defeated Southwestern on May 9.

The Piasa Birds threatened in the last inning but were unable to get the 3 more runs to get the win.
Staunton runs were scored by Dillon Pritchett, Cayden Silvester, Cody Ury, Brady Gillen, 2 ea.; Adam Overby, Trace Trettenero, Luke Meyer, and Cole Sternickle, 1 ea.
Gillen led the hitters with 2 and 3 RBIs. Pritchett had just one hit, but it was a home run good for 2 RBIs. Other hits/RBIs were by Overby 1/2, Best 1/1, Ury 1/1, Matthew Sievers 1/2, Luke Meyer 1/0 and Sternickle 0/1.
Silvester started on the mound. He pitched 4 innings, struck out 8 walked 6, gave up 6 hits and 6 runs. Meyer pitched 3 innings, struck out 2, walked 3, gave up 5 hits and 4 runs.
On Tuesday, May 10, the Bulldogs traveled to Carlinville. The Cavaliers dominated and won this game 10-0 in 5 innings.
H. Kufa pitched for Carlinville. He struck out 8, walked 1 and gave up one hit.
Sam Best had Staunton’s lone hit.
Gillen pitched 4 innings for the Bulldogs. He struck out 1, walked 1, gave up 9 hits and 8 runs (7 earned). Pritchett pitched .1 inning, gave up 2 hits and 2 runs.
On Wednesday, May 11, the Bulldogs played at home vs. Gillespie. This was an exciting game in that there was a lot of hitting and scoring. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs ended up one run short, losing to the Miners 7-8.
Bulldogs runs were scored by Best (2), Overby, Trettenero, Meyer, Pritchett and Sievers (1 ea.) Pritchett had 2 hits for the Bulldogs including a home run and earned 3 RBIs. Other Bulldog hits/RBIs were by Meyer 3/0, Sievers, 2/2, Best 2/0, Overby 1/0, Silvester 1/0, Grant Neuhaus 0/1.
Best pitched 4.1 innings, struck out 5, walked 1, gave up 10 hits and 5 runs. Ury pitched 2.2 innings, struck out 1, walked 0 gave up 5 hits and 3 runs.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to end regular season play at home on Saturday, May 14th, with two games - 10 a.m. vs Carrollton and 4:30 p.m. vs Porta/Ashland.
Their first game of playoffs was set for Monday, May 16, at Roxana.
