County man dies in crash

Illinois State Police, District 18, responded to a two-vehicle fatal traffic crash on Wednesday, May 11. The crash took place on Illinois Route 108 at East 2nd Road in Montgomery County at 5:40 p.m.

Ronald C. Schaaff, age 49, from Carlinville was operating a 2008 red Yamaha motorcycle and died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Schaaff was traveling behind two other vehicles westbound on Illinois Route 108 at East 2nd Road in Montgomery County. A 2013 blue Dodge truck pulling a box trailer was the lead vehicle. It was driven by Harold K. Schmidt, age 57, from Carlinville.

Schaaff passed the middle vehicle as Schmidt was making a left-hand-turn onto East 2nd Road. The motorcycle struck the rear of the box trailer being pulled by Schmidt. Schaaff was ejected and pronounced deceased on scene by the Montgomery County coroner. Schmidt claimed no injuries at the scene of the crash. Illinois Route 108 was closed for approximately four hours.

An investigation is ongoing.
