Lady Bulldogs are County champs

The Staunton High School basketball Lady Bulldogs proved why they were ranked #1 at the Macoupin County Tournament by winning it all. As a #1 seed, the Lady Bulldogs received a first round bye.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Lady Bulldogs played the winner of Monday's game between North Mac and Piasa Southwestern. They defeated North Mac by a score of 50-18 advancing the Lady Bulldogs into the championship game to be played Jan. 20.

In the other bracket on Monday, Carlinville had defeated Mt. Olive 62-14 and Gillespie defeated Bunker Hill 48-13. On Tuesday, Carlinville got an overtime victory over Gillespie advancing them to the championship game vs. Staunton.

The championship game saw Staunton defeating Carlinville 45-37 giving the Bulldogs the title with the Lady Cavaliers placing second.

Staunton also had two girls named to the County All-Star Team. All-Star Team members are Caidy Tuetken and Haris Legendre of Staunton, Regan Bussman and Madison Niemeyer of Gillespie and Jill Stayton of Carlinville.

With no time off to celebrate, the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play at South County on Jan. 24, at Southwestern on Jan. 25, at Hillsboro on Jan, 26, at home vs. Greenville on Jan. 27, Feb. 1 at Bunker Hill, and Feb. 5 at Pawnee.
