Silas M. Burgess, 80, of Staunton, Ill., died peacefully at his residence with family by his side on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022. Born Oct. 10, 1941, in McNabb, he was a son of the late Louis and Oma (Mayberry) Burgess. He married E. Diane Barfield on April 20, 1985, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2012.
He worked as a truck driver for Hansen Trucking in Granite City for over 20 years. Silas was a big family guy. He was a drag racing fanatic. He enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, and liked baseball (St. Louis Cardinals).
He is survived by one daughter, Robin Booth of Jerseyville; three sons, Douglas (Leanne) Burgess of Brighton, Michael Burgess of White Hall, and Darren Burgess of Mitchell; nine grandchildren, Ellen (Chris) Mathenia, Samantha (Andrew) Wood, Douglas Burgess Jr., Megan (Steven) Vonnahmen, Danielle (Kyle) Moore, Destiny Burgess, Amanda Burgess, James Burgess, and Allianna Burgess; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Schafer of Bowling Green, Ky., and June (Darrell) Nash of Jerseyville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Ray Burgess; and four brothers, Otis, Louis, Wayne, and Lawrence Burgess.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 21, at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton with Rev. Nancy Hubert officiating. Burial was at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon.
