SHS scholastic bowl teams do well in recent tournament play

On Saturday, Jan. 8, the Staunton Scholastic Bowl team participated in the IHSSBCA Scholastic Bowl Turnabout Tournament held in Granite City. Teams participating in the Turnabout Tournament included Granite City, Alton, Althoff Catholic, Greenville and Staunton.

Blake Moore and Carson Buffington were recognized as All Tournament. Blake was recognized as 6th all tournament and Carson was recognized as 7th all tournament.

On Jan. 18, both the varsity and junior varsity teams won all three matches at their meet in Gillespie. The varsity team beat the Litchfield team 280 to 160. Staunton varsity topped the Vandalia team 330 to 60. They also beat Gillespie Varsity 220 to 130. Max Eldred, Blake Moore, Joseph Siegfried and Ava Roller scored toss-up questions.

The junior varsity team won their match against Litchfield 170 to 90. They won their match against Vandalia 220 to 40. They also won against Gillespie 80 to 60. Buzzing in for correct toss-up questions were Carson Buffington, Thomas Ogata, Lily Dothager and Brady Seelback. All team members helped earn points on the bonus questions.

On Jan. 22, the Staunton A Scholastic Bowl team took 2nd place at the Frostbite Tournament held in Granite City. Granite City A took 1st place. Teams participating in the competition were Granite City A and B, Staunton A and B, Carbondale B, O'Fallon A and B, Southwestern B and C, Springfield B and Macomb B.

Joseph Siegfried was recognized as 5th All Conference. Carson Buffington was recognized as 7th All Conference.
