Terriers are Staunton Tourney Champs

Staunton Junior High School hosted its annual basketball tournament last week. The 7th grade Terriers emerged as champions of their round robin portion of the event, while the 8th grade team took home 3rd place in their bracketed tourney.

The 7th graders began play on Tuesday night with a 35-9 victory over Bunker Hill. The game featured balanced scoring with Luke Moore (9 pts.), Owen Looney (8 pts.), Isiah Laux (6 pts.), Owen Rizzi (4 pts.), Peyton Luketich (4 pts.), Lucas Dillon (2 pts.), and Lucas Coalson (2 pts.) all entered the scoring column for SJHS.

On Wednesday, the team played very well in a 40-6 victory over Litchfield. Moore (15 pts.) and Looney (11 pts.) notched double figures for the Terriers, and the scoring was rounded out by Laux (6 pts.), Coalson (4 pts.), Rizzi (2 pts.), and Ty Simpson (2 pts.).

Finally, Staunton finished up a solid week with a 42-16 victory over Nokomis on Thursday to take home the crown. Laux popped in 20 points (three 3's) to pace the attack, and he was aided by Moore (9 pts.), Looney (8 pts.), Braylen Brown (3 pts.), and Rizzi (2 pts.). Laux also captured the Free Throw Award by nailing 21 out of 25 attempts.

The 8th grade team received a first round bye due to COVID issues at a local district. On Wednesday the team took on eventual champions St. Francis Holy Ghost out of Jerseyville in the semifinals. Staunton jumped out to an 11-8 halftime lead but could not hold on in a 29-23 defeat. Aaron Bodner paced the attack with 8 points. Matthew Overby (7 pts.), Bryce Coalson (6 pts.), and Ashton Rizzi (2 pts.) also scored for SJHS. The team bounced back the next night and played very well in a 33-11 victory over Gillespie. The Terriers had well rounded scoring in this contest, as Rizzi (7 pts.), Bodner (7 pts.), Logan Tuetken (4 pts.), Coalson (4 pts.), Braden Pfeiffer (3 pts.), Elliot Frank (3 pts.), Overby (3 pts.), and Cole Rather (2 pts.) all contributed to the cause. Bodner was rewarded for his solid play with a spot on the All-Tournament team, and Coalson took home the Free Throw Award by making 21 out of 25 opportunities.

The Terriers also played a non-tournament game before Thanksgiving when they hosted Gillespie on Monday, Nov. 22.

The 8th graders established an early lead and held on for a 30-18 victory. Bodner (6 pts.), Rather (6 pts.), Carter Legendre (5 pts.), Rizzi (4 pts.), Tuetken (3 pts.), Cason Kapp (3 pts.), and Coalson (3 pts.) all scored for Staunton.

The 7th graders pulled away early and went on to win by the score of 45-4. Moore (14 pts.), Looney (9 pts.), Coalson (6 pts.), Laux (5 pts.), Simpson (5 pts.), Dillon (2 pts.), Rizzi (2 pts.), and Luketich (2 pts.) all scored for Staunton.
