Overview of 1930-1939 Though SHS continued to field successful teams into the 1930s, perhaps the most important happening of the decade came off the playing field, as Staunton’s first and only mascot was chosen during the 1935-36 school year. Before that time, local teams had always been referred to by their school colors. However, mascots were taking hold across the state, and the administration left it up to the student body to vote on proposals. Norm Norvell, a junior at the time, successfully lobbied for “Bull Dogs,” which later was chang...

Overview of 1920 to 1929 The first-ever SHS yearbook was published for the 1920-21 school year. It was a quality piece that included a surprising amount of detail about the students. Unfortunately, it was not produced again until 1924 and stopped being published soon thereafter. One can only presume why there were no annuals for over twenty years. The Great Depression certainly played a role. A push to conserve paper during wartime was likely a factor as well. Regardless, Staunton was not alone in its plight, as most community high schools in t...

Overview of 1908 to 1919: Students had been receiving an informal education in Staunton since the 1880’s. It wasn’t until the 1894-95 school year that Staunton High School officially offered classes. 13 years later, SHS participated in the Macoupin County Meet, the first time the school sent student-athletes off to competition. In the early part of the century, the event consisted of two portions: oratory and track. While the oratorical portion, which took place in the morning, was the main feature, the majority of the focus will be on the spo...
