The Trine University women's bowling team captured its first conference championship in school history recently at the American Heartland Bowling Association (AHBA) Championships. The Thunder scored the most points in the final points paying event of the 2021-22 season to claim victory for the team's first tournament victory as well. In the past week, the Staunton High School Lady Basketball Bulldogs defeated Litchfield, 62-13 on Feb. 7; lost to Vandalia 38-51 on Feb. 9; and defeated Gillespie 52-25 on Feb. 10. The Staunton 8th Grade Terriers wrapped up their season last week at the East St. Louis Class 3A Regional. The Terriers came into postseason play as the #4 seed and faced #5 Greenville in the first round on Saturday, Jan. 29. SJHS played well and avenged an earlier loss to the Jays in a 30-23 victory. The Staunton 7th Grade Terriers wrapped up their season last week at the Staunton Class 3A Regional. The Terriers came into postseason play with a 21-0 record and the #1 seed in the Regional. Unfortunately, SJHS ran into a tough East St. Louis Lincoln team and lost by a score of 41-35. On Tuesday, Jan. 25, the Scholastic Bowl team recognized Joseph Cisler on Senior Night. Joseph has been a valuable member of the Scholastic Bowl team in Staunton since his freshman year. Joseph plans to attend SIUE to pursue a degree in Cyber Security. He is the son of David and Susan Cisler. Hunters in Illinois harvested a statewide total of 683 wild turkeys during the 2021-2022 fall archery turkey season. The total compares with a statewide turkey harvest of 783 in 2020-2021 and a five-year average of 688 birds harvested. This season 24,768 permits were sold (excluding landowner permits) compared to 24,187 for the 2020-2021 season. The season dates were Oct. 1, 2021, through Jan. 16, 2022, and all 102 counties were open for hunting. Harvest consisted of 51 percent toms and 49 percent hens. Olive and Gillespie canceled due to COVID concerns, the 7th grade finished its season on Friday, Jan. 14, at Calhoun.
