    On Monday, March 14, the Dogs opened up their season at home vs. Nokomis, losing 2-5, and giving up 4 unearned runs on 6 errors. The dogs put up 6 hits by Sam Best, Adam Overby, Luke Meyer, Matthew Sievers, Cole Sternickle and Cody Ury having 1 hit each.     The Staunton High School track teams were in Champaign competing in the Gene Armer Invitational at the U of I campus last weekend. Several athletes recorded personal bests as the new season gets underway. Freshman Grace Bekeske had the best place finish for Staunton as she set a personal record (1.42m) in the high jump and placed 10th. Brianna Hainaut set a personal best 9.87 time in the 60 meter dash. Sam Schnefke ran a personal best 3:08.42a in the 800 meter finals.     The Staunton 8th grade girls volleyball team traveled to Vandalia on Monday, March 14, for a Sectional title match vs. Roxana. The Staunton girls played one of their most exciting matches of the season. They won the first set 25-21. Then they lost a set, 25-27. The girls came back strong with determination to not be stopped, and they won the third and deciding set 25-12.     The Staunton High School Girls soccer season kicked off with a tie against Maryville Christian. Last season's leading goal scorer and now senior captain, Lily Bruhn, started the season off well scoring two goals; one goal was off an assist by Lexi Hester and the other was on a PK.     The Staunton 7th grade girls volleyball team completed their season with an impressive 16-5-0 record. On March 7, the Staunton girls defeated Hillsboro 25-15, 25-15 to win Regional #15.     The 2022 Illinois spring trout fishing season will open April 2 at 57 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state. An early opportunity at select trout sites – the spring catch-and-release fishing season – will open March 19.     The 2021-2022 Illinois bobcat season concluded Feb. 15 with 290 bobcats harvested by hunters and trappers. A total of 174 (56 percent) of bobcats were taken by hunting, while trapping accounted for 116 (37 percent) of the harvest. Twenty-three (7 percent) were salvaged by permit holders from circumstances such as road kill. Hunters and trappers in Jefferson County reported 17 bobcats, which was the most for any county this year.     Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 147,004 deer during all 2021-2022 archery and firearm seasons that concluded Jan. 16. The total preliminary deer harvest for all seasons compares with a total harvest for all seasons of 162,752 deer in 2020-2021.
