Class of 1940 Basketball (Boys) Returning lettermen Livion Basso, Art Brumme, Valentine Cool, and Merlin Menk welcomed a new coach to the 1939-40 basketball team, as Carl Medenhall began his tenure running the program at SHS. After winning the 8th grade 3A state sectional game on Monday, March 11, against Macon Meridian, the Lady Terriers advanced to the first round of State games as part of the Elite 8. On Friday, March 15, the 8th grade volleyball Terriers traveled to Pana to battle Peru Parkside. Overview of 1930-1939 Though SHS continued to field successful teams into the 1930s, perhaps the most important happening of the decade came off the playing field, as Staunton’s first and only mascot was chosen during the 1935-36 school year. Before that time, local teams had always been referred to by their school colors.
