    The Staunton High School girls basketball team defeated Vandalia 66-35 on Dec. 12. On Dec. 14, the girls traveled to South Fork and were able to win there 48-41. On Dec. 17, the girls returned home to play Porta/Ashland (Petersburg).They lost this one 34-40 bringing their season record to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.     The Staunton Terriers swept two non-conference games last week, as both the 7th and 8th grade squads defeated Litchfield and Greenville. On Monday, Dec. 12, SJHS welcomed Litchfield to Staunton. The 8th grade Terriers shot out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter and eventually won the game 56-19. Staunton made eight 3-pointers on the night, with Isiah Laux (12 pts.) notching half of them. The teams participating in the tournament included Alton, Bunker Hill,Carlinville,Cumberland,Gillespie,Granite City, Greenville, Mater Dei, Metro East Lutheran, Mt.     The Staunton High School girls basketball team were off to an impressive start on their 2022-23 season, opening with 7 wins in a row. The Lady Bulldogs started on Nov. 14 with the 61-28 win over Northwestern. On Nov.15 they defeated Wesclin 65 - 31; defeated Mt.     After losing their opener to Madison, the Staunton High School basketball team came back with two quick wins. They outscored Roxana in every quarter to take the 44-24 win on Nov. 29. On Nov. 30, the Bulldogs added another win by defeating Bunker Hill. This game was tied 33-33 at the half and Bunker Hill actually led 38-35 after three quarters.     The Staunton Terriers had a great week last week, as both the 7th and 8th grade teams went 3-0 in their own tournaments to claim championship titles on their home floor.     The 7th grade Lady Terriers basketball team had earned their way to the Illinois State Tournament at Auburn with their 22-0 record. In their first game at Auburn, Staunton faced another undefeated team, Pittsfield Pikeland (24-0). Pittsfield Pikeland defeated Staunton 30-9. This loss ended the Terrier’s season with an admirable 22-1 record. Pittsfield Pikeland went on to defeat Washington MS 58-28. The win put Pittsfield Pikeland in the State championship game vs. Paris Mayo to be played Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m....

    By Tom Emery Several area high school basketball teams will participate in a 16-team shootout to honor the legacy of a beloved area broadcaster. The fourth annual T. Todt Shootout vs. Cancer event will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at Hillsboro High School, and will feature five boys’ and three girls’ games.
