  • Terriers enjoy successful 2022-23 seasons

    The 2-M Conference recently hosted its annual banquet to award league titles for the 2022-23 school year. Member schools include Bunker Hill, Carlinville, Gillespie, Mt. Olive, Southwestern, and Staunton. The conference offers league play in eight different sports (see below). Staunton took home hardware in all eight sports, including seven 1st place titles.     The Staunton High School men's track team competed in a quad meet Tuesday, May 9, at Gillespie. In addition to Staunton, teams competing included Gillespie, Greenville, and Piasa (Southwestern). The Staunton team managed to win first place by posting 73 team points. Southwestern was 2nd with 66, Greenville 3rd with 64 and Gillespie 4th with 58 points.     The Staunton boys placed 2nd with 85 team points at the Gillespie Invitational held May 12. Litchfield was 1st with 106 team points. Staunton competitors placing in the top five included Trace Trettenero who was 2nd in the 100m finals with a time of 11.31 Nicholas Monahan was 4th in the 3200m.     A total of 18 teams competed at the Girls Sectional Track Meet held Thursday, May 11, at Carlinville. The Staunton girls placed 12th with 19 team points. Litchfield was first at Sectional with 94 team points. The Staunton girls able to score in the top 10 included the following: Hannah Daugherty won 9th in the 200m with a PR 29.57.     The Staunton Country Club women's golf league had another great day for golfing. There were two teams that tied for low scoring and low putts. The teams were Sue Stiegemeier, Martha Riley and Denise Hemphill. The other team that tied for all was Gloria Paolino and Rosemarie Pickerill.     Staunton 8th grade Lady Terriers had defeated Gillespie in two sets 25-13 and 25-11 to win their Sectional and advance to State. The Lady Terriers won 3rd place at State last weekend. They played Friday and Saturday in Pana. On Friday, March 17, the girls made a comeback to win an exciting match over Athens.     The Lady Bulldogs hosted the Maryville Christian Lions at the Staunton City Soccer Complex at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 13, to kick off their 2023 season. This season the Bulldogs will field a team of six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores, and eight freshmen. Senior goalie, Valeria Cazares will anchor the defense as she returns to goal.     The Staunton track team competed at the Jersey Indoor Winter Thaw meet held Saturday, March 11, at Principia College Grafton Center.     On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Staunton High School Scholastic Bowl team participated in the Lincoln Railer Rumble Scholastic Bowl Tournament held in Lincoln.
