On Sunday, Aug. 27, 4-H Shooting Sports members participated in the 9th annual 4-H Fall Classic at Brittany Shooting Park in Bunker Hill. 4-H members from the Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery Counties competed in the shooting disciplines of archery, air rifle, .22 rifle, and shotgun. It was perfect golf weather this past Thursday for the SCC. The course was in great shape and we had a wonderful time golfing. The low gross was the team of Kim Meyer and Rosemarie Pickerill (39). The low net was Sue Stiegemeier, Karen Crosslin and Martha Riley (19). They also had low putts (12). We enjoyed a great lunch together. Next week we will tee off at 9:00 am. The Staunton High School football Bulldogs avoided another shut-out with a third quarter TD. The Bulldogs traveled to Vandalia for a conference game on Friday, Sept. 1. The Boys Golf (152) team walked away with three big wins tonight against highland (161), Triad (162) and Granite City (173) on holes 19-27 at Oak Brook. The Annual Golf Tournament held to benefit the Friends of Community Hospital of Staunton has been scheduled for Oct. 6 at Timber Lakes Golf Course. This annual tournament helps to pay for capital projects at Community Hospital of Staunton so the community is always encouraged to get involved in this annual event. It was a beautiful day golfing at the SCC on Thursday. We cancelled the preceding last Thursday due to the extreme heat. The low gross was the team of Linda Best and Rosemarie Pickerill. The Staunton High School Bulldogs were scheduled to play their first game of the season at home. Everyone there would agree that the best decision made that day was to move the game and play it on the new turf field in Greenville. Playing that game on such a rain drenched night would have completely destroyed Staunton's grass field. The Staunton High School volleyball girls started their season with five wins. They played Metro-East Edwardsville and Springfield Lutheran in tournament play on Aug. 25, winning both matches (2-1 and 2-0). They played Triad in a non-conference match on Aug. 26 and won 2-0. Also on Aug. 26, they played LaSalle - Peru winning 2-1 and Hartsburg - Emden winning 2-1 in tournament play. The Staunton High School boys golf team won a quad match on Friday, Aug. 18th at Timber Lakes, with a team score of 174. Gillespie fininshed 2nd with 229, Auburn was third with 234 and Mt. Olive finished with 239 team score. Broc Best was match and team medalist with his round of 41 on the par 36 course. Preston Denny shot a 42.
