  • To You … With Love,

    Nov 1, 2023

Hill Talk Across the lowlands of life, shadows weave their webs along the landscape. In these wearied places, one is destined to search for sunlight, as the mystery of things lay low in the mind. Anointed only by grace, one survives these unadorned cycles of soul time where thoughts fail to climb skyward and hearts feel under nourished by such a few portions of hope. Still, man cannot fall from the infinite fingers of a loving God and beyond all lowlands the mountains raise to finer higher life. Ours is to complete the journey wherever it...

  • To You … With Love

    Oct 18, 2023

Michelle and Melissa were better known in their household as George and Sam. These were the names that he called them when he came into the house, from work, from golf, from wherever and whatever had kept him away from his girls. Teasing them with the boy's names that they will still answer to when called. A great Dad with an eagle eye on their education as he watched their grades and achievements from kindergarten to college. Missy didn't get her two majors with Suma Cum Laude by accident; the work began in the heart of the Father who had...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Oct 4, 2023

To the editor: The older generation really knows hardship and the sacrifices they had to make to just get by. In today’s world, the devil is working both sides of the street. I empathize for those children today and what they must face. The actual truth, the absolute truth is virtually impossible to find. Billy Graham once said, “The depth of love and obedience, is not something you can work up yourself. You have to pray that God will help you by the power of his holy spirit working with you.” Our political parties are at each others throa...

To the editor: We have recently gained a new appreciation for Staunton and St. John's Hospitals and their dedicated staff. On the evening of Sunday, September 17th, Joan and I went to bed at 10 pm. I noticed a discomfort in my left shoulder. It was a dull, pain. It was not intense pain, but it was enough to keep me from going to sleep. At midnight, I still had not gone to sleep and the pain persisted. I asked Joan to Google and find symptoms of a heart attack. I believe this was inspiration of the Holy Spirit. When the Google search revealed...

By: Jill Pertler Regular readers of this column will attest to the fact that my summer has been defined by two words: home improvement. I was set to start the summer with a new storm door at the front of the house and a walk-in shower at the very back. Both are still undone. But fret not! I’ve accomplished quite a bit in the middle of the house: flooring, countertops and painting cupboards to name just a few. But not the shower. I’ve had the new shower unit (albeit still in the box) sitting in my bedroom for close to a month. I need the plu...

Thursday, March 29 , 1923 -- OPINION -- The thing that Staunton needs more than she does any one particular thing is a commercial club or organization of the business men and other public spirited and progressive citizens. During the past several days the Star-Times has received two communications from concerns which are seeking locations for branch factories. It happens that in each instance the inquiries came from people who employ female help in large numbers and as there is but little employment to be had for this class of labor in...

Thursday, March 15 , 1923 -- WINDSTORM LEAVES WAKE OF DAMAGE -- This community on Sunday and Sunday night was visited by the heaviest rainfall on record since about a year. Rain fell almost continuously after 10 o'clock in the morning and in the evening at times came down in veritable torrents. Sewers and ditches everywhere were taxed to their utmost to take care of the great quantities of water. At about 10 o'clock at night the rainfall ceased and a heavy wind, blowing with the velocity of a gale, arose and this did much damage, particularly...

Thursday, February 22 , 1923 -- DON'T BORROW, SUBSCRIBE--Listen to this classic print-shop fable which is going the rounds. Once upon a time a nickel-nurser Sent his kid to borrow his neighbor's paper and the kid upset a hive of bees and soon was covered with lumps.
