By: Jill Pertler It’s that time of year. Out with the old, in with the new. It would be an understatement to say that I welcome the new. It would more of an understatement that I still mourn the old. But I’m getting there. It’s been a year of hardship for me as well as a year of healing. Mostly healing. When I look back to last January, I can honestly say I was walking around in a complete fog. It’s a wonder I got out of bed, much less wrote columns - which I did. I didn’t miss a one. I think meeting those deadlines helped in ways I didn’t un...

By Tom Emery This winter has brought the usual roller-coaster temperature swings, along with occasional bone-chilling winds and fast freezes. They’re nothing like the “sudden change” of 1836. On Dec. 20 of that year, central Illinois was hammered by a monster cold front that dropped temperatures 40 degrees in a matter of minutes and left settlers awestruck. The freakish event killed at least five people in Illinois, as well as thousands of stock and game. Though it sounds outlandish today, numerous accounts verify the phenomenon, which moder...
By: Jill Pertler Blowing out 18 candles on your birthday cake is a huge milestone. It happens in an instant. You are an adult! As such, you can vote and get married. You can serve in the military, get a tattoo, go to a casino, donate blood and get called for jury duty. You can even win the lottery (because you are finally old enough to buy a ticket). Even though you can do all these things (and more) being 18 does not make you a grown-up. I’ve witnessed this firsthand with some of my own kids. They are young adults and independent in so many wa...

By Tom Emery Coal mining has been a key component of the Illinois economy for over two hundred years. Sadly, many men have lost their lives in the process. The state has endured some of the worst mining disasters in American history, rocking small towns that were dependent on the coal economy and leaving scores of women and children destitute. In an era when safety was not emphasized, coal mining was an even more dangerous job, and hundreds of men paid the price in lives and disabling injuries. Coal was first mined in Illinois in 1810, and...
By: Jill Pertler I never saw it coming; this life I now live. I had things so planned out. They’d been in place for more than three decades and my husband and I were finally going to enjoy the things we’d worked so hard to attain. And then he died. Just like that. So here I am. It would be tempting to talk about how all this sucks. Because much of it does. But this last year has opened doors and afforded me possibilities that never would have occurred if he were still here. It’s changed me in ways I never would have seen coming. And as much as...
By: Jill Pertler I was an early proponent of online shopping. I lived in a rural community without much access to retail, so it was a natural fit. I even experimented with grocery purchases when it was a new and novel thing. I wrote about the crazy packaging practices of my delivery orders back in 2017. Yes, I was that cutting edge. I didn’t make online grocery shopping a habit. I preferred to pick out my toilet paper in person. Then COVID hit in early 2020 and all our worlds – and shopping habits – changed, perhaps forever. E-commerce had alre...

If you're in a work situation where you have a strong, positive relationship with that supervisor or boss above you, congratulations. While it definitely does happen, this is not always the case for many of us in our jobs. Good relationships with a supervisor require effort on your part, but it's effort that pays dividends. Studies have shown that one of the most important things affecting someone's job performance, stress levels, and overall job satisfaction and happiness is the relationship...
