By: Jill Pertler The doorbell rang unexpectedly tonight. I wasn’t anticipating anyone. I went to answer it and got quite a wonderful gift. Outside my front door stood a lovely, petite woman with bright blue eyes. She wore designer glasses, hoop earrings and turquoise Nikes. Her hair was a medium blond with just hints of gray here and there. She was a stranger; but not for long. Within moments, she’d introduced herself as Alice, the friend I’ve corresponded with via mail sent the old-fashioned way. Alice reads my column in a newspaper in Ohio...

By: Jill Pertler There’s a new game sweeping the Internet. It’s called Wordle and the premise is pretty simple. You get six chances to correctly guess, ascertain and or sleuth out a random, five-letter word. With each guess you are told which letters are in the word, which are not and which are in the right space within the word. If you correctly guess the word in four guesses or less you earn bragging rights on various social media platforms. Any game that sets up bragging rights on social media is destined for stardom. In that regard, Wor...

One size fits all doesn't work Letter to the editor: I look forward to the weekly Star-Times when I get it once a week, two per every other week, etc. based upon the postal service’s delivery issues. These comments are related to the February 23, 2022, issue and the article by Mr. Stafford of the Vienna High School. Mr. Stafford is 100% correct! Every point he discusses is absolutely accurate and I was impressed of his example of One Size Fits All (OSFA). The continual attempts of big government attempting to override local control is a n...

Photos do not have to be 50 years old to be interesting. Just looking back 5 - 10 - 20 years, the fashions and...
By: Jill Pertler I’ve spent all of my life in the north, where winter is winter and snow is snow. The snow falls down from the sky. If you want to get to work in the morning you often have to rid your driveway of it. Out of necessity, most of us have snow blowers, or shovels on a lesser day. Blowing the driveway (and sidewalks and walkways) typically, happens more than a few times each winter, which, by the way, often lasts for at least six months. Blowing the snow is something northerners do, because they have to. Those of us living in the t...

Every spring, fire safety experts along with the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) reminds residents about the life-saving habit of checking their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms when setting their clocks forward for daylight saving time. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 81 percent of battery-operated smoke alarms which failed to operate in home fires had missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. To combat these alarming statistics, the IFSA worked with the Illinois General Assembly to update a law to...

Thursday, December 15, 1966 -- VANDALS HIT LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL EARLY MONDAY -- Several vandals broke into the high school early Monday morning. The Star-Times did not arrive at the school until 7:30 a.m. and by that time the custodial staff had cleaned up much of the mess, having started before 6:00. It was evident, though, what greeted the staff when they arrived that morning. Eggs were still being scrubbed off the walls and floors, broken light fixtures were hanging...
