By: Jill Pertler I remember a book from early childhood written by Charles Schulz. It was titled, “Happiness Is” and it caused quite a stir amongst the preschool crowd (and beyond). For good reason. Its message was simple, meaningful, ageless and timeless. So timeless, in fact, that its simple idea remains meaningful and ageless to this day. Happiness is… everywhere. It is all around us. It is ours for the finding and the taking. It is where each of us chooses to see it. Schulz’s book started with “Happiness is a warm puppy,” and it is in th...

By: Jill Pertler I wanted a kayak. It was a simple request I repeated repeatedly. I talked about how we would go kayaking this summer on the lake. We’d have a blast making family memories while building our triceps and getting a tan. I communicated as clearly as I could, in English, which is the language they speak. I wanted a kayak. They got me a blender. There was a reason for their actions. They like smoothies. And, despite the allure of a sleek kayak cutting through the cool, clear water, it was a distant vision. In my climate zone, you c...

Thursday, April 5, 1990 -- Elmore's Retirement Marks 38 Years in Education -- Describing himself as not overly sentimental, retiring Staunton High School Principal Gil Elmore says his 38-year career has given him "a lot of headaches, and a lot of fun." He noted a number of significant changes in society over the years which affected education such as the information explosion, changes in the American family, and increased record keeping demands. Elmore said early in his career he was "a teacher and a coach, having a good time. Being a...

  • Inflation is recurring issue in American history

    May 11, 2022

By Tom Emery Inflation is a frontline issue in America today, and has driven down approval ratings for the Biden administration. It’s one of several periods in the nation’s history when rising prices have hammered consumers, especially the working class. The current inflationary pressures are the strongest in decades, but at times, they’ve been even worse. Inflation in the World War I era was particularly severe, as the period from late 1916 through 1920 sent prices skyrocketing. Inflation reached double digits in every month from October 1916...

By: Jill Pertler On November 16, 2020, my life changed forever. And since that day, each 16th of the month is an anniversary for me. It marks another month since my husband left this physical world. As such, each number 16 on the calendar comes as a reminder of the day, of my loss. Of his absence. It’s one month longer that he’s been gone. One month longer of me missing him. April marked 17 months. It seems like such a long, long, very long time. But, in months, it’s less than half of the time in years that we had together. Still, the 17 month...

Disapproves of Livingston mayor's comments Letter to the Editor: I recently sent a letter to the Attorney and Clerk for the Village of Livingston. In my letter, I expressed my concern over comments that were made by the Mayor of Livingston regarding members of the community that did not grow up in town. I asked that a copy of my letter be presented to the board members so that they would know how I felt about the Mayor's comments. It is my understanding that my letter was not presented to the board members, nor were my concerns communicated to...

By: Jill Pertler I don’t know if this column will ever be published. Or better put, if I’ll have the nerve to publish it. It’s about divorce and I have no experience in that arena. I never divorced. In fact, I had a beautiful and wonderful marriage. My parents never divorced. No one in my immediate family has (so far) divorced. So basically, I have no experience speaking on this subject. Still I had a bit of a eureka about it today. And when I have a eureka, I often feel compelled to share. So share I will. I am a widow. Sometimes people I kno...

  • Mother's Day became holiday in 1914

    May 4, 2022

by Tom Emery Mothers everywhere will rejoice. So will the greeting-card companies, flower shops, and telephone providers. Though celebrated in pockets in previous years, Mother’s Day has been an official holiday since May 9, 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a day to honor the nation’s mothers. “The signing was not that important to Wilson in a political sense. But it would not have taken much persuasion for Wilson to sign it,” said Andrew Phillips, curator of the Woodrow Wilson Pr...

By: Jill Pertler Today I was overwhelmed by a feeling of gratitude. This isn’t a given for me, at this point in my life. Sometimes I feel the opposite of gratitude; for that I am sorry. I have been given much. I have been loved much. My life, for the most part has been wonderful. I was born in a country where much is wonderful and much is taken for granted. I flip the light switch and my room is illuminated, any time day or night all 365 days of the year. I turn on the faucet and have access to an unlimited amount of clean drinking water. Somet...
