By: Jill Pertler Life is hard. There are losses and endings of many kinds: Losses we are born with. Losses we learn to live with. Losses we hide. Losses that scar us. Losses we die with. There is loss of love. Loss of health. Loss of lifestyle. Loss of life. The end of a career. The end of a marriage. The end of a friendship. We all (ALL!) go through hard times. We all experience hard things during our journey on this earth. Death, taxes and hard times. We all have at least three things in common. I’ve asked myself the obvious question over a...

Kindness By Bryan Golden There is undue rudeness and thoughtlessness in every day interpersonal interaction. Friends, relatives, and strangers can act inconsiderately. More and more people are under increasing amounts of stress. Work, commuting, family, kids, errands, chores are among the many factors that can induce anxiety that causes individuals to be irritable. People have become isolated and detached from one another. Earlier in history, everyone depended on each other for their wellbeing. Someone would always make an effort to help a...

By: Jill Pertler This column is about friends. Before writing it, I thought to myself, ‘I wonder if there is an official Friends Day?’ So I did the Google. Turns out there is an International Friendship Day. It is July 30. Guess which day I did this particular Google? Yep. July 30. I took it as a sign. There are no coincidences when it comes to serendipity - or friends. Apparently I’m supposed to write about friendships this week. It’s a lovely topic because I’ve been surrounded by friends of all types throughout my lifetime (so far). To...

Perhaps readers with a good eye/memory for detail will remember when the officials' box on the east side of the field was taken down or when the temporary greenhouse was in use. Letter to the editor: I have over the decades watched many congressional hearings. The hearings about the Americans held in Iran, the McCarthy-era hearings, the Watergate hearings, and others. All have left some compelling images in my mind. Now the January 6 hearings have concluded for the summer. This hearing has been remarkably free of the grandstanding that has marked the others. I'm disheartened that so many people have opted out of listening to the hearings. How can we make good decisions if we refuse to look at what has happened and is...

By: Jill Pertler “Tell them you love them over and over again. Tell them too much, and never too little, for the time we have is short, but the love we have is endless.” - Dane Thomas This week would have (should have) been my 35th wedding anniversary. I guess it is my 35th wedding anniversary. I’m still married, albeit without a husband. A widow (deep heavy sigh). He died shortly after our 33rd anniversary. But still, I remember, and I celebrate. No, I just remember. We’d planned to do something “big” on this anniversary. We never felt like w...
