  • Midterm elections brought larger power swings in past

    Oct 19, 2022

By Tom Emery With the nation sharply divided, Congressional majorities have been slim in recent years. The power struggle helps lead to the overkill of attack ads that we’re all tired of. Congressional balance of power, though, has not always been so close. Both the Democrats and Republicans have enjoyed huge majorities at one time or another, and some midterm elections have brought staggering shifts of control. In the period before the traditional two parties of today, the Democratic-Republican Party dominated the first third of the 19th c...

This German Day parade took place in Staunton in 1908 and shows the north side of Main Street. Much of Staunton's population was German in those days and there was great pride in what the German culture had contributed to the community. In 1917, with the advent of World War I, there was an overall suspicion of Germans. The city of Staunton took part in loyalty demonstrations where people of German descent were forced by mobs to show loyalty by kissing the American flag. This photo is the...

  • German heritage prevalent in Illinois

    Oct 5, 2022

By Tom Emery German-American Day is observed every October 6, and in Illinois, there is plenty of reason to celebrate. German ancestry remains prevalent in Illinois, as it has for a century and a half. The strength of German-Americans helped shape Illinois history through a Civil War, as well as two world wars against the old country. Of the nearly 1.8 million residents of Illinois in 1860, nearly 325,000 were of foreign birth. Germans were the largest ethnic group with 130,000, nearly eight percent of the state’s total population. Twenty p...

By: Jill Pertler I know a lot of busy people. They use calendars to remind them of their appointments and commitments. They pull out their phone to see if they have 15 minutes of free time anytime in the upcoming week, or maybe month. They talk about the business of busyness because it’s important stuff. It’s all-encompassing, sometimes. Oftentimes because there is no escaping it. It’s the price of success, prestige, happiness, self-esteem and fulfillment in life; busy leads to all these and more. It’s all good. Or maybe not. Take it from so...
