By Tom Emery During much of Abraham Lincoln’s lifetime, the New Year’s holiday was a bigger deal than Christmas. His celebrations of January 1 evolved with his rise to fame. As a young backwoodsman, Lincoln did little to ring in the new year, and as he grew to prominence in Springfield, he often worked on January 1. As President, however, he was part of a big celebration, as the annual New Year’s reception was a major event on the White House calendar. New Year’s Day in 1863, however, was a defining moment in the Lincoln Presidency, as the Ema...

By Bryan Golden The New Year is a time of resolutions. It's a time when people commit to making a change in their life. Losing weight, changing jobs, saving money, making money, a new relationship, getting in shape, going back to school, or giving up smoking, are just some of the goals people set for themselves on Jan. 1st. Almost 90 percent of Americans will make at least one New Year's resolution. Less than 20 percent will succeed in accomplishing even one. Whatever your resolutions, here are some specific strategies to help you succeed....

By Bryan Golden Among other things, the holidays are a time of giving and receiving gifts. The question most often asked of people is, "what did you get?" Much less frequently asked is, "what did you give?" Invariably, the inquiries concern material gifts. Purchasing a gift can certainly be thoughtful and a wonderful gesture, especially when it's backed up by your actions. However, the most valuable presents are those that aren't sold in stores. When you give your love, your time, help someone...

Thursday, March 27, 1975 -- DIPPING INTO OLD MAN MOSES' BUCKET -- In a previous article, I mentioned the early settling of the Staunton area, as recorded in some of the published histories of Macoupin County. It seems that the families who came to this area were concerned with the Three Rs – reading, riting and rithmatic. Among the first school teachers were William Wilcox. Roger Snell, Tristian and Archibald Hoxsey. Inasmuch as most of the early settlers acquired land on which they grew crops, the need for a placea to grind their grain was i...

By Tom Emery It is known as "the day that will live in infamy." Like the rest of the nation, the people of Illinois felt its scars. Wednesday, Dec. 7, marks the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, which left 2,403 Americans dead. The family resided at 1208 South Marshall Street. The fifth of eight children, Clark...

Thursday, March 13, 1975 -- DIPPING INTO OLD MAN MOSES' BUCKET --It may be quite possible a large number of the present residents of Staunton and vicinity are not aware of how this area was settled. It was back in the early 1800's that the first part of the present Macoupin County attracted some hardy pioneers. Although it seems that the history of this particular area is rather meagre, when Illinois was admitted as a state in 1818, Macoupin County was a part of Madison County. However, later that year the state legislature, meeting in the...
