    By Tom Emery March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month and in Illinois, that takes on added importance. The state has more than its share of twisters. The National Weather Service and the Illinois State Climatologist’s Office report that the Land of Lincoln ranked sixth in the annual average of tornadoes from 1991-2017, with 54 per year. That figure trailed only Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Florida. The number of Illinois tornadoes has actually increased over the last three decades. An accident shut down Renken Road for two hours on March 5. Vehicles driven by Duane Lowery of Staunton and Edwin and Wilma Langendorf of Midway collided.     Thursday, July 3, 1975 -- Injured in Tractor Mishap -- Charles Hooks, 17, of Staunton was injured Wednesday, June 25, when the tractor he was driving on his father's farm turned over, pinning him under the fender. Sheriff's deputies, Staunton Police and the Benld Rescue Squad were called to the scene, however, construction crew members working on the Bunker Hill Road near the farm released Hooks from under the tractor before the Rescue Squad arrived.
