The information in this column is provided by the book “The History of Staunton High School Sports (1908-2012)” which was researched and written by local resident and School Board member, Steven F. Moore. “Covering over 100-years of multiple sporting events of a local area is quite a daunting task,” and it is important to note that Moore acknowledges that he could not find everything that he wanted to include in the book. The Star-Times releasing and publishing the information as a weekly news column is intended to educate, connect, and pot...
With second-installment property tax bills due in coming months across Illinois, new data demonstrates those tax bills are spiking to new extremes. At the request of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), Gov. JB Pritzker proclaimed Aug. 11, 2024, as 811 Day in Illinois. The intent is to encourage every excavator and homeowner to call 8-1-1 before starting a digging project. This simple, and free phone call is necessary to keep people safe and to protect the integrity of Illinois’ underground utility infrastructure. Every few minutes in the U.S., underground utility lines are unintentionally struck by someone who failed to have utility lines marked. These incidents can cause service i...
By DILPREET RAJU/ CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS Illinois public schools wishing to teach their students about the dangers of overdoses and substance use disorder now have a blueprint to do so from the state. While a school’s use of any of the state’s resource guides is voluntary, some public health advocates consider the creation of the guides a step in the right direction. Administrators and educators can download age-appropriate pre...
Home is where most people feel the safest – but it’s also where you are most likely to experience a fatal fire. Many of these deaths may have been prevented; most fire fatalities happen in the 29 percent of homes that either have inoperable smoke alarms, or no alarms, the NFPA noted. While three-fourths of U.S. homes have at least one working alarm, the question remains as to whether they have en...

Larry Walters was a Vietnam vet who had always dreamt of being a pilot. Poor eyesight kept him from flying. But at 11 am, on July 2nd, 1982, Larry took flight from the backyard of his girlfriend's home in San Pedro, California. Larry tied 42 helium-filled eight-foot weather balloons to his lawn chair, donned a parachute, and strapped himself into his chair. He brought his pellet gun, a CB radio, a camera, water jugs for ballast, a few sandwiches and some beer. Larry thought he might rise about 100 feet. A friend who cut the cord that attached...

One complicated afternoon I drew aside from the hurried crowds and stood alone upon a quiet hill by Silver Lake. In those moments of silence I remember vividly the touch of the soft gentle breeze as it blew across my face. Tender as the sweet kisses of breaking dawn falling over the small morning dove eating low to the ground I felt the spirit of the wind song in my soul. I called this a grace day. As the years go by we all will need to measure the winds that blow over our days. Some will move around us with a kindness all their own. Others...

Our next children’s program is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. The featured book will be School’s First Day of School, by Adam Rex, with pictures by Christian Robinson. School is nervous about his first day on the job. He feels even worse when he overhears two older boys talking. One states, “This place stinks,” while the other replies, “I hate school.” As the day continues, school listens in on some of the classes, realizes that most of the kids are pretty nice, and even learns something about rectangles. He and the janitor ta...
By Tom Emery It’s a day to love the lefties and salute the southpaws. Tuesday, Aug. 13 is International Left-Handers Day, founded in 1976 to celebrate the uniqueness, and challenges, of left-handed people worldwide. Studies show that approximately ten percent of people are left-handed. Scientists are unsure why some people have a dominant left hand, though there is believed to be a connection between genetics and environment. Some left-handers are found to have more left-handed relatives than average. Based on brain function, some southpaws p...
By: Jill Pertler We all started out in the same way. As babies. But what would it be like to go back? Imagine being a baby. I’ve thought about this a few times, while watching my grands navigate their way through this world. I imagine myself in their tiny tottering shoes - or bodies, so to speak. And I realize, with what I know now, it wouldn’t be easy to be a baby again. The dust bunnies themselves could prove formidable. But beyond that, living a toddler-sized life on an adult-sized planet might be frustrating. And intimidating. Overwhelming....

Staunton native and Wall of Honor inductee Arch Hoxsey was the first person to fly 100 miles. On October 8, 1910, he flew from Springfield, Illinois, to the lawn of the St. Louis Country Club in approximately three hours. The distance to St. Louis from Springfield w...
