Prior to 1963, most minor leagues were classified, in descending order, as Class AA, A, B, C, and D. Tensions came to a head with Cedar Rapids leading 16-1 in the top...

By: Jill Pertler I recently wrote a column about dating after a certain age – 50 to be exact. At the start, I planned on a brief column. How much could there be to write about such a dire subject? Turns out I was wrong. There are myriad factors to dating – at any age, but especially after 50. Remember dating? Most people dabbled in the sport during their teens and 20s. The lucky among us ended it there. We found our special someone and left the dating pool to the tadpoles. But then, some of us – too many of us – are thrown back in, much la...

BY AUSTIN GRABOW/STAR-TIMES For as long as I can remember, I have felt out of place or perhaps misplaced in the wrong generation. Being born in the beginning of 1998 means that I am officially considered to be a Millenial (1981 to 1998). After Millenials, comes Generation Z (Gen. Z), which is 1999 to 2016. On paper it looks like nothing, but to be connected to 17 year period of time where I was only alive for eight months of the final year is interesting. Both Millenials and Gen. Z are considered to be technically savvy, with Millenials being...

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is once again under the spotlight after a manager failed to consult a collections committee before purchasing a 21-star flag whose description as a rare banner marking Illinois' 1818 admission to the Union is disputed. The flag's acquisition through an online auction for more than $15,000 precipitated an investigation by Illinois' Office of the Executive Inspector General about money used for the purchase. The purchase also led to division in t...
The next children’s program will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m. The featured book will be Red Riding Hood, retold and illustrated by James Marshall. After being delivered from the wolf, Red Riding Hood vows to “never, ever speak to another stranger, charming manners or not.” Marshall’s illustrations add to the humor, showing the busy kitchen of Re...
