The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced this year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week Oct. 6 through Oct. 12: “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™” The goal of this year’s campaign strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. “It’s simple, working smoke alarms save lives! Due to synthetic materials used in modern construction, homes burn hotter and faster, while also emitting toxic smoke limiting the time you have to escape to less than 2-3 minutes. The early warning from...

John Buford, who earned a reputation as one of the heroes of Gettysburg. An Illinois...

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south readi...

While Illinois’ dual emergence of periodical cicada broods is harmless to people and animals, young trees may sustain serious damage if not protected by mid-June, experts at The Morton Arboretum said. This is the first co-emergence of these two broods since 1803, researcher Katie Dana from the Illinois Natural History Survey told Capitol News Illinois, making it a truly once-in-a-lifetime event. Although each brood will appear in 2037 and 2041, respectively, the 221-year-long cycle means the next time both broods emerge at the same time will h...

The Shepherd Father's Day always sends me back to the Missouri hills where first I remember the sound of my grandfather's voice. Coming from parents who had been divorced, I seldom saw my own father, but it was the rough and gnarled hands of my Pa that clutched my heart. He was the tree planted by the waters that yielded its fruit in season, and whose roots went down deep in his families' tree of life. I always saw a part of his pride and dignity in my Aunt Eva's spirit. I still see a glimpse of him, now and then in my brother Bill. We are the...

By: Jill Pertler A very good friend shared a written message regarding thoughts on aging with me. It was about growing old, but not feeling like you are growing old. It gave me pause to ponder. Your hair may be graying. Your skin thins and sags. Laugh lines – aka wrinkles – provide evidence of the happiness you’ve experienced. Medical issues may be more prevalent and demand more of your attention than in the past. All around you, your body shows obvious signs of aging, but inside you’re still the same you – youthful and young. Isn’t that the tr...
