The Magnificent God who saved the party was the Lord's way of entering into the heart of life's reality. He wasn't ready to declare his ministry, but the need was there, and ministry begins out of human need, so he used this as his place of beginning miracles. And what a start it was. It had within it all the joy and celebration of his ministry. The changing of water into wine; of making out of nothing that which is; that which changes and stimulates and brings transformation. He is saying to us that he will create the best kind of life, the...

By: Jill Pertler When my kids were babies, I took lots of photos – always hoping to get the one perfect shot. This was during the prehistoric, pre-digital age, when cameras required film and film required developing. You couldn’t take a million pictures and preview them on your screen. You had to send them away and pay to have them printed. One by one by one. Back then, I couldn’t tell a megapixel from a winning lottery ticket, but I knew I’d be able to recognize the perfect shot when I saw it. Trouble was, after hundreds of developed photos,...

The grocers association was dissolved in 1986 with the fading of neighborhood stores. The East Mill building was enpty for a long time. It caught fire in 1989, revealing the original Staunton Light and Power...
Two Lane Highway is the third album by American country rock band Pure Prairie League, released in 1975. The line-up of the band was drastically changed from their previous albums. Currently, the tax stands at 45 cents a gallon. On Monday, July 1, 2024, the gas tax increased to 47 cents a gallon. Illinois is behind only California, which charges residents 60 cents per gallon in gas taxes. Before 2019, the state had a 19 cents per gallon gas tax. It was doubled that year to 38 cents to help fund a $45 billion infrastructure bill. At the same time, lawmakers set the tax to increase each year to adjust for inflation, sparing a public vote on a tax hike. In addition, in July 2022, the state put a freeze on the gas tax for six...

By PETER HANCOCK Capitol News Illinois When Illinois high school students sit down to take their annual state assessments next year, they will take a different exam than in recent years. The Illinois State Board of Education recently announced that starting next spring, it will use the ACT exam rather than the SAT. Both are standardized tests that measure students’ proficiency in core subjects such as English language arts and math. Both are also commonly used for college admissions – although many colleges and universities have stopped req...
By Tom Emery In a town the size of Benld (pop. 1,600), the phrase “urban legend” may be a misnomer. But rumors of gangster Al Capone in the town persist, nine decades later. Though unproven, many residents of this southern Macoupin County village believe that Capone conducted all sorts of illegal business in Benld, including the manufacture of bootleg liquor. A mining town established in 1904 with a high immigrant population, Benld (pronounced “beh-NELD”), 50 miles northeast of St. Louis, boasted 3,300 residents with at least 32 saloons...

Girl Scout Cadette Troop 6390 would like to thank everyone who stopped by their two cookie booths this past weekend and to provide support. The price increase and inflation seems to be hurting the cookie sales this year. The girls still have leftover cookies and they’re almost out of time to get them sold. Troop 6390 is looking for individuals to help them donate the rest of these cookies to the local first responders, Staunton Helping Hands Center, Staunton Nursing Home, or The Glenwood’s Assisted Living. The idea is for those interested to ch...
